Remember the Alamo

So over the weekend we took a trip to San Antonio and decided that it's not a city we particularly enjoy. We came back early and spent a little time with my brother in Oklahoma City, which was much more fun.

  • Being able to drive longer than I thought I could
  • A brother who lets us stay with him at the last minute
  • Blowing up blocks
  • Friends that enjoy action/sci-fi movies with me

What didn't you like about San Antonio?

Basically, San Antonio was not what we expected. We both had kind of invisioned a smaller, more rurual kind of town. When we got there, it turned out to be a pretty large city and we were staying downtown, so our first problem was parking -- pay $30 a day for the hotel to do it, or try to find our own lot. Then, there was the noisy, partying people having fun in the streets. Keep in mind that these are our first impressions, when we've arrived at 1am after many hours of driving.

We decided to stay to check out the river walk the next morning. Again, my mental picture of a nice, wide water-way with big sidewalks and open air was replaced with the reality of a tiny creek jammed inbetween tight buildings (mostly bars) that smelled pretty bad. The sidewalks often didn't even have room for two people to walk side by side, and there was some trash from the parties the night before.

In the end, we wanted a quiet get-away and should not have gone to a party town. We'll know better for next time.
